Top 10 digital camera accessories

by Debbi Allen on 16th Aug 2010

Want to know what essential accessories to buy for your digital camera? Look no further than our top 10 digital camera accessory countdown…

1. Filters

Relatively low cost, a filter can enhance your photos no end and can prevent hours of post-production work too. The square filters from Cokin are easy to change and come in a variety of strengths and colours.

2. Tripod

No matter whether you’re working in a studio or out in the field, a tripod will help prevent shake and allow for longer shutter speeds and more photos in lower light. We like the Manfrotto tripod and head systems.

3. Cleaning kit

Compacts and DSLRs alike need regular cleaning of the front lens element to remove any dust specks. DSLRs will also need sensor cleaning kits, like this one from Visible Dust.

4. Bag

What camera bag you go for will depend on your needs. Two straps help if you’re carrying a lot of kit, but some will expand or contract depending your needs.

5. Photo viewer

The 3” or smaller screen on cameras can make it hard to view images in all their glory, so it can help photographers when they’re out in the field to check compositions on a photo viewer. Canon’s M80 is a great option.

6. Photo printer

Invest in a decent photo printer. A3+ printers will cost a little more, but give you more options to display with. We’d recommend Epson’s fabulous range of printers, like the R2880.

7. Memory cards

When you’re out and about taking photos, the last thing you want to see flash on your camera is ‘Memory full’. Make sure you always carry spare memory cards. This way you’re covered if one corrupts, too!

8. Spirit Ievel

Banish skewed horizons forever with a simple device like this Seculine digital spirit level. Green indicates straight, while amber and red need correction.

9. Flash gun

Portraits and wildlife images can both benefit from a little off-camera flash to produce catch lights in the eye and create more dynamic shots. Check to see what flash guns work with your camera.

10. iPhone

Download apps to tell you which way the sun will rise or fall, as well as apps to enable you to read your fave mag while out and about – perfect if you need some shooting advice out in the field.
