Samsung SH100 review

The touch-screen compact with Wi-Fi that will appeal to a new generation of shoot-and-sharers

Samsung’s SH100 compact camera aims to provide great-quality photos and video while maintaining an accessible feel that’s similar to a smartphone’s. The camera body looks smart and clean with only four buttons outside of the touch screen, and all the menus revolve around a single home button with a simple swipe-to-scroll function. There’s also the option to customise the menus by dragging the icons from one to another, giving you preferred quick access menus.  

Anyone with a touch-screen phone will be immediately comfortable with the controls, and there are plenty of shooting and filter options available to experiment with. The Automatic modes do a good job in most situations, but if you want more control over your shots then you can use the program setting once you’re more confident. There are also some great slideshow and 3D album effects available.

The SH100 boasts Wi-Fi connectivity that enables uploads to popular social-networking sites directly from the camera. There is also a function to send images directly to people through email. It also boasts to be the first camera to allow for a smartphone to be wirelessly connected as a viewfinder. Unfortunately, the remote shutter app feature is only compatible with Samsung smartphones, which is a shame. 

HD video recording is available at 1280 x 720, and if you have a DLNA-ready TV then the video can be streamed wirelessly. A MicroSD card is essential, as the camera has no internal memory. There is an option to wirelessly back-up the camera to your PC, however.

The SH100 is a simple, stylish camera with some powerful connectivity features – it’s just a shame some of them aren’t more versatile. But overall it’s a solid compact with plenty of features to explore and is available at an affordable price point.
