Meet the Samsung HMX-U10 – the latest compact camcorder to hit the shelves in style. Joining the early craze of pocket camcorders, the U10’s spec sheet looks impressive enough to help it rise to the top leader board. We delved further to find out how it stands against the competition.
The U10’s main rivals are currently the FlipUltraHD from Pure Digital and the Kodak Zx1 – the former boasting an idiot-proof interface and the latter boasting the versatility to switch from HD to normal shooting modes.
Like the Kodak Zx1, the Samsung U10 offers full HD 1080 recording, but ups its game when it comes to shooting stills. It manages to offer 10 megapixel resolution compared to Kodak’s meagre 5 megapixels – giving it an edge for photographers.
We love the Samsung U10’s sleek looks, which include a gorgeous curved upper body, making it very comfortable to hold. The microphone stretches across the top of the gadget and the power button sits just around the corner on the side.
Around the back features a wonderfully simple layout, which includes the movie record, playback and stills buttons. The rest of the controls are navigated using a touchpad, which is very intuitive and speedy. The touchpad includes a back button, a menu button and most impressively, a one-touch YouTube upload control, which offers hassle free uploads in just a few touches of a button. This is easy to use and means you can share your footage online quickly and easily.
On the top is the two-inch LCD screen, which is a bit on the small side unfortunately and not good for sharing your footage with friends. However the Samsung U10, like other models, does connect to your television using the HDMI out connection so this is a better way of showing off your movies and stills.
There are plenty of things that could be improved about the U10, such as an option for an external microphone, image stabilisation and a bigger LCD, but there is no denying this is a fun and versatile piece of kit which does its job admirably. Highly recommended for on-the-go shooting and stills.
Final Verdict
A really fun gadget, which is great to have to hand for all occasions for both video and stills photography
